Her class “Over 50 Outside” has become the most well-attended class series each semester. Smith has been leading hikes for OLLI for the past six years, along with co-leader and hiker Vickie Stoll. OLLI volunteer instructor Lorraine Smith was one of 100 women chosen to participate in a national project called “Over 50 Outside.” The goal of this group, led by women, is to get outside and hike. This class starts February 7 and is available online and in-person. Travel can call for complete submersion in a foreign culture. “Armchair Traveler: Here We Go Again” takes students through the experiences of OLLI travelers. Samples will also share fun ways to form new, healthier habits in this class also offered later in the semester, from March 21 through April 18. If interested in brain development, and how trauma or sicknesses such as COVID-19 can alter the brain, take a class from educator and author Joni Samples who will explore these questions. Also, students can discover Oroville’s Museum Mile, with five tours led by docents which will document Oroville’s history. If students aren’t ready to start classes in February, there are some classes which start later in the semester such as “Brain Development, Trauma, and Your Mindset,” which looks at how habits form and offers tips on how to create new, healthier habits and abandon bad habits. Online conversational classes on deep listening, meditation, science fiction, finance and current events are also featured on Zoom. One of these classes is called “Art Nouveau,” which is taught by Chico State Professor Emerita Dolores Mitchell. If students prefer to learn from home, 34 spring classes will be held via Zoom. Students can also time travel to investigate the constitutional government in the United States as shared by English philosopher John Locke. Some examples of spring classes offered are “Conversation on the Tao Te Ching” which delves into the nature of existence.
